Matlock - A Grand Dame ready for renovation

Matlock represents everything that drew Melbournians to Mount Macedon in the early 20th century. A truly stunning block of land on the Golden Mile, with panoramic views to the You Yangs and on a clear day, Port Phillip Bay, with a microclimate that nurtures the indigenous flora and provides a fertile haven to the introduced European plantings. First built in 1921 by George W.P. Creed, the founder of Woolworths, the double storey home rests on blue stone footings with a rendered brick lower level and weatherboard second storey. The home is grand including formal lounge with wood fireplace, formal dining room with double French doors opening to the deck, study, kitchen and sitting room all with lovely views to the garden. Maid quarters are complete with service bells to all rooms. An imposing staircase rises to the second level where there are three further bedrooms with attic windows, shared bathroom and storeroom.
Edna Walling was recruited to design the garden. It remains a testament to her landscape architecture to see the coherence of pathways, plantings and dry-stone walls all combining into a wonderful, romantic and rambling garden. There is a G and T deck with magnificent views, tennis court, half croquet lawn, long curving driveway, terraced orchard and expansive lawn areas. The garden is host to Douglas Fir, Copper Beech, Sequoia, Birch, Elm, Yew, Luma, along with understorey plantings of Rhododendrons, azaleas, liquidambars, hydrangeas and magnolias. Other outside features are 2 double garages and access from both Sangster’s Road and Mount Macedon Road.
Matlock has been home to a Victorian Premier and the Japanese Ambassador to Australia during wartime, no doubt many dignitaries visited during these tenures. In fact, the Miniature Japanese Maple in the garden was planted after the war by the Japanese Ambassador.
For lovers of history and tradition, Matlock is ready for renovation to restore to its original glory. A grand and stately home set amidst a superb garden.
